Troop 85 is part of the Patriots’ Path Council and the Skylands District, serving Scouts throughout Sussex County. We proudly represent the communities of Andover Borough, Andover Township, Newton, Hampton, Branchville, Green Township, Lafayette, and many other nearby towns. We are an active, community‑driven troop with a long tradition of leadership, outdoor adventure, and Scouts who strive for excellence.
Most of our Scouts attend Newton High School, Sussex County Technical School, or High Point Regional High School, reflecting the wide area our troop represents. While many Scouts live in Andover and Newton, Troop 85 welcomes youth from all across Sussex County who are looking for a troop with energy, opportunity, and a strong sense of belonging.
Our adult leadership is made up of dedicated, experienced volunteers who believe in the mission of Scouting and work hard to support every Scout’s growth. Families play a major role in Troop 85 as well, contributing to events, outings, service projects, and the overall spirit of our program.
Troop 85 is a Scout‑led troop. The Patrol Leaders’ Council (PLC), led by the Senior Patrol Leader, develops the troop’s program and plans activities that help Scouts advance, build skills, and have fun. The PLC is guided by the Scoutmaster and Assistant Scoutmasters, who provide coaching and support while ensuring the Scouts maintain ownership of their troop. Activities are carried out using the patrol method, giving Scouts real leadership experience and responsibility.
We offer a full year‑round program that includes weekly meetings and monthly outings. Our Scouts camp, hike, bike, canoe, attend district and council events, and participate in meaningful community service throughout Sussex County. Each summer, Troop 85 attends a week‑long summer camp at one of the many outstanding Scout reservations within driving distance. These experiences create memories that Scouts carry with them for life.
Even with an active schedule, our Scouts successfully balance school, sports, music, clubs, and other commitments. Scouting fits into their lives while giving them opportunities they cannot find anywhere else.
Advancement happens at each Scout’s own pace. Along the way, they explore 141 Merit Badges covering everything from first aid and lifesaving to science, trades, business, outdoor skills, and future careers. They learn, grow, and often when they least expect it, have a tremendous amount of fun.
Troop 85 is proud to be part of the Skylands District of the Patriots’ Path Council, connecting our Scouts to a wide network of events, resources, and opportunities across northern New Jersey.
