Troop 85 “Buffalos” Patrol Takes First Place at Skylands District Klondike Derby
Senior sled tops field of 36 patrols in single-digit conditions at Winnebago Scout Reservation
Andover/Newton, NJ (January 24, 2026) — Troop 85 proudly congratulates the “Buffalos” patrol, whose senior sled earned 1st place overall at the Skylands District Klondike Derby, one of Scouting’s premier winter outdoor skills competitions. Competing against 45 sleds, the Buffalos demonstrated exceptional teamwork, preparedness, and Scout spirit—earning the top finish in rugged conditions that dipped to 4 degrees.
Troop 85 participated in the Skylands District’s annual Klondike Derby held Friday, January 23 through Saturday, January 24, 2026 at Winnebago Scout Reservation (102 Timberbrook Rd, Rockaway, NJ 07866). The troop also camped overnight, embracing the full winter experience and adding to the challenge that defines this iconic Scouting tradition.
“The Premier Outdoor Scouting Skills Competition” puts patrols through a series of skill stations that test practical Scouting knowledge and cold-weather self-sufficiency. Patrols navigate from station to station as Scout-led units, relying on their sleds and the equipment they prepared in advance—living the Scout Motto: Be Prepared.
Throughout the weekend, Troop 85’s sleds faced a demanding slate of stations including: fire building, woods tools, first aid, measurements, orienteering, lashing, knots, model campsite, Scout spirit, archery, ice rescue, and nature identification, along with equipment inspection and surprise stations that reward adaptability and resourcefulness.
Preparation for the Klondike begins weeks in advance, as patrols build and refine their sleds and assemble the supplies needed to compete. Traditional sled construction is encouraged, and adaptable designs—including removable wheels—help Scouts stay ready for changing winter conditions.
